Lonato del Garda, 2nd March 2018
A smart city is built only thanks to a shared design through a participatory approach that puts the public in close contact with the private sector. In this way it was in Lonato del Garda (BS) where the district heating system will be activated in the municipal territory by the end of 2018 thanks to the heat supplied by the Feralpi Group steelworks, one of the most important steelmaking groups in Europe, which has its headquarters in the territory of Lonato and ENGIE, player in the energy transition, present in district heating sector with 10 networks in Italy. ENGIE will be responsible for the design and construction of the grid and the distribution of heating energy.
The investment, carried out jointly by Feralpi and ENGIE, will total 4 million euros. The entire process has been technically developed in partnership between the engineering company Energard and ENGIE. The Municipality of Lonato del Garda has played a central coordinating role, following the bureaucratic and authoritative process so that the process could be carried out on scheduled time. A virtuous synergy that has result in the shared vision into a sustainable project and the project into reality.
Indeed, by next winter, the heat recovered from the cooling vapours of the steelworks will heat the public buildings of the Municipality of Lonato, bringing in the coming years not only considerable savings in economic terms, but also contributing to the protection of the environment.
“The Municipality of Lonato del Garda - comments Roberto Tardani, Mayor of Lonato - has already shown a concrete commitment to improve the air and life quality of the lonatesi. The first step was to join the Covenant of Mayors. The new European regulations promote the use of waste heat from industrial processes in efficient district heating systems, so the Feralpi industrial project, realized with the involvement of ENGIE, can also give benefits to our community by reducing pollution from fossil fuel consumption ".
“Being partners of this project - explains Giovanni Pasini, Managing Director of Feralpi Holding - achieves from the conviction that only with the creation of a strong partnership between public and private it is possible design a city of the future, where public administrations, citizens and enterprises dialogue each other and put their resources and energies as a common factor. This approach responds to a precise value: believe in a sustainable development. For Feralpi, industrial production can only be guided by sustainability criteria and, therefore, can be a source of well-being for the Community in which it is present".
"In an environment in which 50% of CO2 emissions and PM 10 are generated by domestic heating systems, choosing district heating is, from a technological point of view, the best solution to reduce environmental impacts. This choice is even more efficient if carried out with by integrating local stakeholders, alongside institutions. The district heating network of Lonato del Garda, realized by recovering 100% of the energy, is an excellent example of ENGIE's daily commitment to, operating as a "territorial architect", place environmental sustainability and efficient energy management at the very centre of its choices" emphasizes Matthieu Bonvoisin, CEO of ENGIE Reti calore.
Benefits for Lonato del Garda
Environmental and economic. The benefits that the district heating infrastructure will take have two natures, benefits will start already inside Feralpi plant where the start of steam recovery, no more vented into the atmosphere, will answer to production cycle needs to be designed according to circular logics by reducing consumption and the related environmental footprint.
Heating buildings with recovered steam enable saving every year 447 TOE (Ton of Oil Equivalent), as much as 20 tanker, which put in a line will occupy around 380 meters.
In terms of CO2 the project will provide an emission reduction by 1059 ton per year, equivalent to 66 airships.
Again focusing on environment, there will be a water saving equivalent to the one otherwise dispersed in the steam column correspondent to the cooling towers of the steel factory.
Lonato del Garda will also be safer thanks to the decommissioning of the thermal power plants fuelled by fossil resources and substituted by district heating.
Not least, the municipality will see a reduction of heating cost for its buildings, with benefits for all Lonato’s citizens.
